MINISTRIES

The Richard Preston Centre for Excellence

The Richard Preston Society is the non-profit arm of the church. The Society aims to help build community capacity by assisting members of community to reach their full potential. The Centre is located inside the church in the space traditionally called the “hall”. The Centre also includes the large meeting rooms on the lower level and the library / meeting space on the main level. It is fitting that the Richard Preston Centre for Excellence be connected to Cornwallis Street / New Horizons Baptist Church and at least for now, be located in this space where so many leaders have been fostered and encouraged, many taking the reins in the continuing struggle for social justice for people of African descent.

We envision the Centre as a safe place where our children can come to socialize and get off the streets. When it is fully operational, services will include tutoring, mentoring, arts / music instruction, and guided recreation, along with a broad spectrum of health and nutrition clinics. The Richard Preston Centre for Excellence will also offer leadership training, language instruction, including African languages. and a former inmate reintegration program called “Begin Again”.

New Horizons Baptist Church Sunday School

The Church Sunday school is a part of our children’s ministry. Here children learn about their faith and the Bible in a way that is understandable and engaging for them. Sunday school begins at 10:20 AM each Sunday morning before service during the course of the school year. Children from grades primary to six are welcome.

New Horizons Baptist Church Children’s Choir

We are so blessed by our children. SAESO – Saved and Empowered Singing Out, our children’s choir is another aspect of our children’s ministry. The choir is directed by Deacon Melinda Daye and accompanied by our church musicians. Children in the church and community are welcome to participate.

New Horizons Revival Choir

The revival choir consists of born again baptized believers who love the Lord and love to sing His praises! Our role is to spread the gospel through song with the hope that someone will be inspired by our message to have a closer walk with the Lord or come to know Him!

Men’s Brotherhood

This is a fellowship of men of all ages who work as the male complement to the Ladies’ Auxiliary. They hold various events throughout the year to encourage men in their walk with Christ and to raise funds for the church. During the summer months, the Brotherhood mans the grill for our community BBQ’s and the church picnic. And they can surely cook! The Brotherhood also works to make opportunities for our children, such as sending kids to camp.

They meet on the 3rd Tuesday of each month.

Women’s Missionary Society

The WMS has been active for over 75 years! These women selflessly serve to see the gospel message spread in our own community and around the world. They are actively working to support missions’ efforts at home and internationally. If you have a heart for missions, then consider serving alongside the women of the WMS as they serve missionaries at home and abroad.

The Ladies Auxiliary

This group of women is phenomenal! They are the helping hands of the church. The Ladies’ Auxiliary holds all kinds of activities that not only provide food, fun and fellowship for the entire community, but donates the proceeds of those activities to the church for its operations and special projects. Annual teas, dinners, and yard sales are just a few of the events that keep them busy throughout the year.

The Ladies’ Auxiliary is comprised of women of all ages. New participants are always welcome!

Seniors

Our seniors are active throughout all the ministries of NHBC.  Check regularly on our events calendar for special events and seminars specifically for seniors.

“Changing Minds, Changing Lives” After School Tutoring

This was a fantastic program that ran for five years. It is now closed. Tutoring is offered by the Black Educators Association on Gottingen Street.

Worship

The worship ministry at New Horizons Baptist Church is made up of many different parts. We have a praise team, children’s choir, sanctuary choir, and tech team that all work together to lead our congregation in worship on Sunday mornings and at services through the week.

Praise Team

Our praise team is made up of both musicians and vocalists. This team works together to open our services by leading us into worship.

Tech Team

This team serves in worship “behind the scenes” or in our case… in the balcony. This team controls the audio-visual/technical aspect of leading worship.
